How to Replace a Rotten Post / Column

shadow

Small repairs around a home are always needed. As a homeowner it is important to build the confidence to do small jobs. The bottom of columns around the house are always the first thing to rot, especially if they are touching ground or have a downspout attached to it. Some of these posts can be structural or cosmetic. The post that we will replace in this video is not load bearing. When they are, the beam or the section of the roof will need to be temporarily supported while you replace the column. In this DYI video, we will demonstrate how to replace a non-load bearing post/column with minimal tools and no experience.

The easy way to see if the bottom of your posts/columns are deteriorating is to probe wtih a screw driver at the bottom. If a load bearing post is compromised, it can affect the structure and can create bigger problems.
